(Hell and back)
You could laugh till you cried
You could lose yourself a while in the silent screen
You'd forget where you'd been, what you'd seen
You were part of the silver screen
All the world just passed you by
You just sat there starry eyed
As the lady of the keys
Added atmosphere with ease by her expertise
And the hero got his man
While the Keystone cops were still trying to find the gang
All the world just passed you by
You just sat there starry eyed
Ba-ba-da-ba-dum
Ba-ba-da-ba-dum
Ba-ba-da-ba-dum
Then came the day when those
Talking pictures came to town
This innovation had people talking
For miles around
They had forgotten the thrills they had seen
When men like Chaplin had come to the screen
Gone was the silence that once was a dream
The day the talkies came to town
The day the talkies came to town
The day the talkies came to town
You could laugh till you cried
You could lose yourself a while in the silent screen
You'd forget where you'd been, what you'd seen
You were part of the silver screen
All the world just passed you by
You just sat there starry eyed
Ba-ba-da-ba-dum
Ba-ba-da-ba-dum
Ba-ba-da-ba-dum
Then came the day when those
Talking pictures came to town
This innovation had people talking
For miles around
They had forgotten the thrills they had seen
When men like Chaplin had come to the screen
Gone was the silence that once was a dream
The day the talkies came to town
The day the talkies came to town
The day the talkies came to town

Available as track 4 on the album 'This One's On Me'. 1. 2020 Version (4:06) (available as a download only; this features new drums, bass, and some other changes, but the vocals are the same as the original) Baby, my heart is breaking
And there's no hope, no hope inside
The sky is an ocean of darkness, ooh
No-one, no-one, no-one to hold me in the long lonely night
(Tell me) how can I, how can I forget you
Oh, how can I go to sleep
When I know that I love you
I love you and always will
(Heart be still) heart be still
(Heart be still) heart be still
(Heart be still) heart be still
(Heart be still) oh yes
When you, when you are lonely
And you're feeling so blue
Think of (think of) the true love
I gave to you
You know, baby you don't know
I gave my love
My arms are, they're waiting
(Come home) come home
(Come home) come home
(Come home) oh, come home
My arms are waiting
(Heart) heart be still now
(Heart be still) maybe, maybe, she'll come back
(Heart) oh, if you ever want me, if you ever need me
(Heart be still) listen, listen, ohhhhhhh
(Heart be still)
(Heart be still)
(Heart)
(Heart be still)
(Heart be still) heart be still, oh yes
(Heart be still) ah, ah, ah
My arms are waiting
Ah, ha, ha, ha, ha, haaa
Ha, haaa, haaa, haaaa
Heart, heart be still

This track was originally published by Bertolt Brecht in 1927, and was also recorded by The Doors and David Bowie.
Available as track 5 on the album 'This One's On Me'. Oh, show us the way to the next whiskey bar
Oh, don't ask why, oh, don't ask why
For we must find the next whiskey bar
For, if we don't find the next whiskey bar
I tell you we must die
I tell you we must die
I tell you, I tell you, I tell you we must die
Oh, moon of Alabama, we now must say goodbye
We've lost our good old mama
And must have whiskey, oh, you know why
Oh, moon of Alabama, we now must say goodbye
We've lost our good old mama
And must have whiskey, oh, you know why
Oh, show us the way to the next pretty girl
Oh, don't ask why, oh, don't ask why
For we must find the next pretty girl
For, if we don't find the next pretty girl
I tell you we must die
I tell you we must die
I tell you, I tell you, I tell you we must die
Oh, moon of Alabama we now must say goodbye
We've lost our good old mama
And must have girls, oh, you know why
Oh, moon of Alabama we now must say goodbye
We've lost our good old mama
And must have girls, oh, you know why
Oh, show us the way to the next little dollar
Oh, don't ask why, oh, don't ask why
For we must find the next little dollar
For, if we don't find the next little dollar
I tell you we must die
I tell you we must die
I tell you, I tell you, I tell you we must die
Oh, moon of Alabama we now must say goodbye
We've lost our good old mama
And must have, you know why
Oh, moon of Alabama we now must say goodbye (goodbye)
We've lost our good old mama
And must have whiskey or your know why, you know why, you know why, you know why, you know why, you know why, you know why, you know why, you know why, you know why, you know why
Ragtime Piano Joe
, 1977. Produced by Freddie and Roy Thomas Baker. Length 3:42.
Available as track 6 on the album 'This One's On Me'. The man who made his name in the moving picture show
Was the man whose face we saw, but whose voice we didn't know
The only things we heard him say were on cards we read too slow
The man who made them speak was Ragtime Piano Joe
It was the only life that he knew
Ragtime Piano Joe
It was the only thing he could do
Ragtime Piano Joe
And when the hero walked in the door
Or Charlie Chaplin fell through the floor
Who was it made the show
Ragtime Piano Joe
Al Jolson mooned and crooned when talking pictures came to town
Hoagy Carmichael played a tune, it really brought Joe down
Then Busby Berkeley clinched the deal and all the flicks had sound
Joe took his life one night, they say that he was drowned
It was the only life that he knew
Ragtime Piano Joe
It was the only thing he could do
Ragtime Piano Joe
And when the hero walked in the door
Or Charlie Chaplin fell through the floor
Who was it made the show
Ragtime Piano Joe (La, la, la, la, la repeated many times) And when the hero walked in the door
Or Charlie Chaplin fell through the floor
Who was it, who was it
Ragtime Piano Joe
If late at night into the movie house you go
Sit at the back, stay out of sight, you can still hear Ragtime Joe
When the crowds have gone
The old time songs, the ones we used to know
Can still be heard, but very faint
Its the ghost of poor old Joe
It was the only life that he knew
Ragtime Piano Joe
It was the only thing he could do
Ragtime Piano Joe
And when the hero walked in the door
Or Charlie Chaplin fell through the floor
Who was it made the show
Ragtime Piano Joe
It was the only life that he knew
Ragtime Piano Joe
It was the only thing he could do
Ragtime Piano Joe
And when the hero walked in the door
Or Charlie Chaplin fell through the floor
Who was it, who was it
Ragtime Piano Joe
Jackie
, 1977. Produced by Freddie and Roy Thomas Baker. Length 3:15.
Available as track 7 on the album 'This One's On Me'. 1. Single Version (3:16) (available on the 7" single only; this is identical to the album version, but features a very slightly longer fade-out at the end; on the album, the track ends abruptly, just before 'The Annual Penguin Show' starts, whereas on the single, it fades out fully) And if one day I should become
A singer with a Spanish bum
Who sings for women of great virtue
I'd sing to them with a guitar
I'd borrowed from a coffee bar
Well, what you don't know doesn't hurt you
My name would be Antonio
And all my bridges I would burn
And when I gave them some they'd know
I'd expect something in return
I'd have to get drunk every night
And talk about virility
With some old grandmother
Who might be decked out like a Christmas tree
And though pink elephants I'd see
Though I'd be drunk as I could be
Still I would sing my song to me
About the time they called me Jackie
If I could be for only an hour
If I could be for an hour every day
If I could be for one little hour
Cute, cute in a stupid ass way
And if I joined the social whirl
Became procurer of young girls
And I would have my own bordellos
My record would be number one
And I'd sell records by the ton
All sung by many other fellows
My name would then be Handsome Jack
And I'd sell boats of opium
Whiskey that came from Twickenham
Authentic queers and phoney virgins
If I had banks on every finger
A finger in every country
And all the countries ruled by me
Then I'd know I'd want to be
Locked up inside my opium den
Surrounded by some Chinamen
I'd sing the song I sang of then
About the time they called me Jackie
If I could be for only an hour
If I could be for an hour everyday
If I could be for one little hour
Cute, cute in a stupid ass way
Now tell me wouldn't it be nice
That if one day in paradise
I'd sing for all the ladies up there
And they would sing along with me
We'd be so happy there to be
'Cos down below is really nowhere
And if my name were Juniper
Then I would know where I was going
Then I'd become all knowing
And my beard so very long and flowing
If I became deaf, dumb and blind
Because I pitied all mankind
And broke my heart to make things right
I'd know that every single night
When my angelic work was through
The angels and the devil too
Would sing my childhood song to me
About the time they called me Jackie
If I could be for only an hour
If I could be for an hour everyday
If I could be for one stinking hour
Cute, cute in a stupid ass way
Alright
The Annual Penguin Show
, 1977. Produced by Freddie and Roy Thomas Baker. Length 4:37.
Available as track 8 on the album 'This One's On Me'. Friday night, everybody dresses up in black and white
Look at the crowd, no jeans allowed
A glass of wine, and everybody's having such a good time
Or so they say, so give it away tonight, alright
The orchestra played, the penguins swayed
The movement they made meant nothing at all
Once in a while, they let out a smile
In single file, they were having a ball
Forty seven penguins, all in a row
At the annual penguin show
A waiter stands, a creature of devotion to his fellow man
Shiny black hair, it's so rude to stare
Oh, the band will play, they won't reform their uniforms of yesterday
All black and white it's gotta be right tonight, alright
The orchestra played, the penguins swayed
The movement they made meant nothing at all
Once in a while, they let out a smile
In single file, they were having a ball
Forty seven penguins, all in a row
At the annual penguin show
It wouldn't be right tonight to meet the people from the streets and let them in
You never know just where they've been
You've really got to choose, you mustn't lose, so don't refuse
Your MBE and send it back and call it crap
You've got to be as straight as elastic, oh, oh, oh, oh
You've got to be as natural as plastic, hey, hey
The orchestra played, the penguins swayed
The movement they made meant nothing at all
Once in a while, they let out a smile
In single file, they were having a ball
Forty seven penguins, all in a row
At the annual penguin show
A penguin going, penguins are such lovely creatures
With shiny hair, and silky features
A wobble here, minding there
They take their time, but they don't care
But it's so sad to fence them in
To face the public, smile and grin
Once a year, please, please, let them come
To the annual penguin show
With lots of fishy things to eat
To tempt the palette, web the feet
And, after lunch, a chocolate biscuit
Made specially for 'em, innit
Forty seven penguins, all in a row
At the annual penguin show, no no
At the annual penguin show, one more time
At the annual penguin show
Yeah, yeah, yeah, want to bribe me with a story then
The Saddest Clown
, 1977. Produced by Freddie and Roy Thomas Baker. Length 4:17.
Available as track 9 on the album 'This One's On Me'. Children hurry for the door
While mothers pay the man what he's asking for
They've all come to see the clown
The finest circus ever seen has come to town
He makes them laugh, he makes them sing
To them this man they've waited for is everything
But underneath those fancy clothes and painted smiles there is a frown
The saddest clown has come to town
It all began some years ago
He stopped some children on his way, to say 'hello'
A mother ran out screaming at the strange man
Shouting 'let them go'
And yet the night before, he made them laugh and sing
To them this man was everything
It made him very sad and so afraid, he realised
Without his guise he was anyone
Though that day has gone
The memory lingers on
Though his smile has gone
His fooling still goes on
The unhappy clown
Mothers hurry for the door
While children turn their heads calling out for more
They all want to meet the clown
The finest clown that they have ever seen in town
He made them laugh, he made them sing
To them this man they'd come to see was everything
But underneath those painted smiles, they couldn't see there was a frown
The saddest clown has come to town
Though that day has gone
The memory lingers on
Though his smile has gone
His fooling still goes on, and on, and on
The unhappy clown
Vamp
, 1977. Produced by Freddie and Roy Thomas Baker. Length 5:21.
Available as track 10 on the album 'This One's On Me'.
In a long black gown that flows in the wake
Of the shimmering lady who
Doesn't have to fake the enormous lashes that drip
From her eyes a blue
The cigarette holder always in place
Framing the untouched, timeless face
Of the lady with the eyes
Of the lady with the sighs
Then she dances
And entrances
Stealing glances
She's a vamp burning camp
For the people to stamp
For age cannot hamper
Drenched in champers
The shaded background in Vienna
When she suffered all she knew
So the mocking eyes and the thrown away sighs
Hold smouldering memories too
The graceful glide as she parts the air
The dancing din of her frozen stare
Oh, the lady with the eyes
Oh, the lady with the sighs
Then she sings
The smoke rings
The darlings
She's a vamp burning camp
For the people to stand
For age cannot hamper
Drenched in champers
Legend, myth, and mystery
She comprises of all three
Clouded in her image untouchable
Venturing out always to be
What the minds eye thinks is she
Shrouded in her vales
A sea inscrutable to such as we
She wove a spell to all who came
For the power of a lady
Lies in mixing love and fear
And the eyes that blazed
From a thousand walls
Holds a crystal tear that slowly falls
Oh, the lady with the eyes
Oh, the lady with the sighs
And she flows
As she goes
Faded rose
She's a
Ooh
Reach out, touch her, touch her, no
She's a vamp
She's a vamp, ahh, she's a vamp
She's a vamp
She's a vamp
State Of Shock
Michael Jackson
, 1983. Freddie sings joint-vocals. Length 4:43.
The original demo of this track is unreleased, it was planned for release in 2000 as part of the 'Solo' boxed set, but did not materialise. It was then remixed by William Orbit, presumably intended for the 2014 Queen 'Forever' compilation, but is also unreleased. A video claiming to be the remix was briefly available on Youtube but it could well be a fake.
The track was re-recorded by The Jacksons with Mick Jagger for their 1984 album 'Victory', and reached no 14 in 1984. A live performance of the track, featuring Mick Jagger and Tina Turner, can be found on the 'Live Aid' DVD. Ow

There Must Be More To Life Than This
Michael Jackson
, 1983. Freddie sings joint vocals.
This song features a very similar backing track to the one used for the 'Mr Bad Guy' version (but slightly longer), and features vocals sung by both Freddie and Michael Jackson. One version is a true duet, while the other features Michael Jackson singing, being coached by Freddie. Both versions are officially unreleased. The track was later completed, using elements from a Queen demo, and released on the 2014 'Forever' compilation. 1. Duet Version (3:07) (vocals by Freddie & Michael)
2. Rehearsal Version (2:32) (vocals by Michael with dialogue from Freddie; the song is around 2 minutes long but the piano continues for 35 seconds)
3. Rehearsal Version Edit (2:03) (this is the same as above, but with an earlier fade out) There must be more to life than this There must be more to life than this How do we cope in a world without love Mending all those broken hearts And tending to those crying faces There must be more to life than living A better way for us to survive Why should it be just a case of black or white There must be more to life than this
Why is this world so full of hate
People dying everywhere
And we destroy what we create
People fighting for their human rights
But we just go on saying c'est la vie
So this is life There must be more to life than killing There must be more than meets the eye What good is life, if in the end we all must die There must be more to life than this There must be more to life than killing There must be more to life than this I live in hope for a world filled with love
Then we can all just live in peace There must be more to life, much more to life There must be more to life, more to life than this There must be more to life than this
There must be more to life than this
How do we cope in a world without love
Mending all those broken hearts
And tending to those crying faces
There must be more to life than killing (Freddie: thats right) A better way for us to survive (Freddie: ad-lib) (Ad-libbed) in a world with our children
There must be more to life than this
Why is this world so full of hate
People dying everywhere
And we destroy what we create
People fighting for their human rights
But well just go on saying c'est la vie
So this is life
There must be more to life than killing
There must be more than meets the eye
I live in hope for a world filled with love
Then we can all just live in peace
There must be more to life, much more to life
There must be more to life, more to life than this
Victory
Michael Jackson
, 1983. Freddie sings joint lead vocals and possibly plays piano.
This song apparently began as a Queen track, presumably intended for 'Hot Space', but was not completed. It was then worked on by Freddie and Michael Jackson in 1983, but this in turn remains unreleased. The track may then have been re-recorded by The Jacksons for their 1984 album of the same name, but if so that version hasn't been released either. In November 2011, Brian announced that he was working with Roger on the unreleased Freddie and Michael Jackson tracks, which may have included this song. One track ('There Must Be More To Life Than This') appeared on the 2014 'Forever' compilation, but presumably Michael Jackson's estate refused permission for 'Victory' to be included alongside it.
Lady With The Tenor Sax
, 1986. Length 4:01.
Written, arranged and produced by Freddie Mercury and Billy Squier.
Freddie appears on the 'Work In Progress' version of the track, singing lead vocals. The recording was incomplete, so the released version, on the 'Solo' boxed set, includes the end of the normal album version to make it a complete track.
The album version appears on 'Enough Is Enough', but this does not feature Freddie. I've been faking my past
But now I know my connection is coming through, yeah
I put my ass on the line, hey
Hey baby, so what's new
I told you
Don't look now, I'm inching up behind
Don't look now, in the creases of your mind
Don't stop now, we're moving much to fast
Gonna find out where you draw the line
Here she comes now, so divine (hey come on, come on, come on, she's so relaxed baby)
She's a lady with a tenor sax, hey
Cool baby drives a mean Cadillac
She's a lady with a tenor sax, yeah
You're gonna meet her on her own level, don't look back
Don't look back, don't look back
'Cos the lady's got a tenor sax
She jives, she's so bad
She's a tango with a big, big business sense
She had it
Oh, oh, dee la dum bum bay oh
Bah, ba-dee, dum
Um bum da bee bum
Don't walk now, you'll slip into the past
Don't walk now, can nothin' ever last
Don't look now, the chips are gonna fall
Sooner or later you're gonna be mine
Here she comes now, oh, yeah, yeah
She's a lady with a tenor sax, yeah
She's a lady with a tenor sax
She's a lady with a tenor sax, yeah
She's a lady with a tenor sax
Wait til the next time
Don't walk now, you'll slip into the past
Don't walk now, can nothin' ever last
Don't look now, the chips are gonna fall
Sooner or later you're gonna be mine
Here she comes now, oh, yeah, yeah
She's a lady with a tenor sax, yeah
She's a lady with a tenor sax
She's a lady with a tenor sax
A soul baby cuts a groove on her back
Lady with a tenor sax
She looks, she loves, she walks into the fire
There's a lady with a tenor sax
Fight it over
Lady with a tenor sax
She's snide, she cried, she begged you'd come alive
Lady with a tenor sax
Yeah, yeah
Lady with a tenor sax

Never say never
Never say never, say never
There is a course in life, so all the teachers say
It calls you day and night, it takes your thoughts away
Under a frozen light, you face a long crusade
Where there's a cause you fight, where there's a cost you pay
Find an empty heart, you feel the passion play
It's when reactions start that you can look away
There's no wrong or right, there's just your point of view
And when you face the light then it will come to you
Love is the hero, soldier forever
Life below zero, never say never
Love is the hero, yeah
There is no sacrifice, there is no dead end street
There is no sound advice, only the watch you keep (never say never)
With every step you take, through every room of fear
With every move you make the song will pull you near
Turn your world around and it will come your way
Through your cold-chill nights and your hard earned days
When you face the light it may be hard to do
But when it's all too right then it will come to you
Love is the hero, soldier forever
Love is the hero, live to remember
No path is too steep, no distance too wide
No question too deep, no force can divide
Your fortune you seek, the road will unwind
You're coming to me, to search is to find
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
And when you start to fall into that frozen space
And when you reach the wall and there's no sunny place
And when it all comes down you make it anyhow
Any way
Love is the hero, soldier forever
Life below zero, never say never, never, never
Love is the hero, love is the hero, yeah
March on forever
Love is the hero, yeah, yeah, live to remember, wooh, yeah
Love is the hero, love is the hero
Love is forever, yeah, yeah, yeah
Love is the hero, never say never, never
Ooh, yeah
Oooh
Love is the hero
Never
Love is the hero
