Recorded at the Rainbow Theatre, London, England, on 19 and 20 November 1974.
This album was released as a single disc or 'deluxe' double disc set, as both a CD and download, and as two or four LP sets. The double disc CD and download, and 4 LP set, include a second bonus disc containing the show also recorded at The Rainbow on the 'Queen II' tour, on 31 March 1974. The 2 LP set contains highlights of both shows, with the November show disc including only 10 of the 24 tracks, namely 'Procession', 'Now I'm Here', 'White Queen', 'Flick Of The Wrist', 'In The Lap Of The Gods', 'Killer Queen', 'The March Of The Black Queen', 'Bring Back That Leroy Brown', 'Stone Cold Crazy' and 'In The Lap Of The Gods... Revisited'. The set was also simultaneously released on DVD and Blu-ray, which contains the full November show, plus four tracks from the March show as bonus tracks. A deluxe boxed set was also released, which includes the double disc CD album, DVD, Blu-ray, and replica memorabilia.
The show was earlier released, in part, on the 'Live At The Rainbow' video in the 'Box Of Tricks' boxed set in 1992. It contained thirteen full length tracks, six were edited, and five were omitted entirely. Several of the tracks were rearranged to create a fake 'medley', which followed Brian's guitar solo, and contained 'Father To Son', Roger's drum solo, the reprise of 'Keep Yourself Alive' and 'Liar', before the reprise of 'Son And Daughter'.
While the content of the two releases is essentially the same, there are some differences, mostly concerning the dialogue between tracks. The 1992 video includes a completely different performance of 'In The Lap Of The Gods.... Revisited', which must be taken from a different night than the 2014 release, as well as vocal overdubs throughout. Major differences are noted below, but vocal overdubs are only noted where there is an actual difference between the lyrics heard.
'Flick Of The Wrist' is the only track to appear as a live version for the very first time.
Procession
Track 1. Track length 1:19, song length 1:16.
This track segues into 'Now I'm Here', and is a complete instrumental, with no lyrics or dialogue.
The version on the DVD and Blu-ray is a slight edit, which loses some of the drum introduction before the guitar starts, reducing the length to 1:05.
Details of the original version can be found on the 'Queen II' album page.
Now I'm Here
Track 2. Track length 4:57, song length 4:28.
This track segues from 'Procession', and was also included on the 'Greatest Video Hits I' DVD.
The version on the video in the 'Box Of Tricks' features a few vocal overdubs, but is otherwise identical.
Details of the original version can be found on the 'Sheer Heart Attack' album page. Here I stand
Look around, around, around, around, around
But you won't see me
Now I'm here
Now I'm there
I'm just a
Just a new man
Yes, you made me live again
A baby I was when you took my hand
And the light of the night burned bright
The people all stared didn't understand
But you knew my name on sight
Whatever came of you and me
America's new bride to be
Don't worry baby I'm safe and sound
Down in the dungeon just Peaches 'n' me
Don't I love you him so
Yes, you made me live again
Yeah
Ooh, a thin moon me in a smoke screen sky Where the beams of your lovelight chase
Don't move, don't speak, don't feel no pain With the rain running down my face
Your matches still light up the sky
And many a tear lives on in my eye
Down in the city just Hoople 'n' me
Don't I love him so
Whatever comes of you and me
I love to leave my memory with you
Now I'm here
Think I'll stay around, around, around, around
Down in the city justa you 'n' me Freddie: Thank you, thank you, the nasty Queenies are back - what d'you think of that? Thank you very much, it's really, it really is nice to be back home. And it's been, it's been so long we've missed you all, we really have. Have you missed us?
Ogre Battle
Track 3. Track length 5:30, song length 5:04.
This track was omitted from the double LP set.
Details of the original version can be found on the 'Queen II' album page. Freddie: It's time for 'Ogre Battle' Ha, ha, ha, ha, haa
Now once upon a time
An old man told me a fable
When the piper is gone
And the soup is cold on the table
And if the black crow flies
Find a new destination
That is the sign
Come tonight
Come to the ogre sight
Come to ogre battle fight
He gives a great big cry
Swallow up the ocean
With a mighty tongue he catches flies
Palm of a hand incredible size
Great big eye
Has a focus in your direction
And the battle is won
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Come tonight
Come to the ogre sight
Come to ogre battle fight
Ha, ha, ha, ha, haa
Oooh, watch out
The ogre men are still inside
Two-way mirror mountain
You gotta stay clear and out of sight
Can't see in but you can see out
'Keep a good look out'
The ogre men are coming out
Two-way mirror mountain
They're running up behind
And they're coming all about
Can't go east 'cos you gotta go south
Ogre men are going home
And then the great big fight is over
Bugle blow let trumpet cry
Ogre battle lives for evermore
Ooh, woh, woh
But you can come along
You can come along
Come to ogre battle
Ha, ha, ha, ha, haa Freddie: Thank you, thank you, you lovely darlings. Have you all got your black fingernails? And who's got the white ones? They all seem to be over there. Tell you what, right now, we'd like to carry on with something else from 'Queen II', would you like that?
Father To Son
Track 4. Track length 5:54, song length 5:33.
This track was omitted from the double LP set, but was included on the 'Box Of Tricks' video, between Brian's guitar solo and 'Keep Yourself Alive'. The track was edited, containing the sections from 0:05 to 1:00, and 1:38 to 3:41, where it faded out, segueing into 'Liar', to give a length of 2:58.
Details of the original version can be found on the 'Queen II' album page. Freddie: So this one's called 'Father To Son' A word in your ear, from father to son
Hear the word that I say
I fought with you, fought on your side
Long before you were born
Kings will be crowned, the word goes around
Father to son, to son And the voice is so clear
Time after time I keep on calling you, calling you on
Don't destroy what you see, your country to be
Just keep building on the ground that's been won
Kings will be crowned, the word goes around
Father to son, to son
Yes Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do
Our family song
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do ooh, yeah
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do
Let me move along, along, along, ooh
Take this letter that I give you
Take it sonny hold it high
You won't understand a word that's in it
But you'll write it out again before you die
Oooh, yeah
Oooh, oooh To-da, to-da, to-da, oh yeah
I want to write you out a letter
Oooh, oooh
A word in your ear
From father to son
Funny you don't hear a single word I say
But my letter to you will stay by your side
Through the years, though the loneliness has gone
Sing if you will
But the air you breathe I live to give you
Father to son
Father to, father to, father to son Freddie: Nice, thank you. Thank you very much. Um, right now we'd like to do a little sad song (audience goes 'ahhh') oh yes, so I hope you've got all your handkerchiefs out
White Queen
(As It Began)
Track 5. Track length 5:34, song length 5:06.
The track was also released as a bonus streaming video as part of the 'Absolute Greatest' release in 2009, and on the 'Queen II' 2011 iTunes LP. Both videos include the dialogue at the start of the track, but none at the end, while the 'Absolute Greatest' video also adds 'thank you, thank you, you lovely darlings' from the end of 'Ogre Battle' to the start.
Details of the original version can be found on the 'Queen II' album page. Freddie: This is a number from 'Queen II', written by Brian May, 'White Queen' So sad her eyes
Smiling dark eyes
So sad her eyes
As it began
On such a breathless night as this
Upon my brow the lightest kiss
I walked alone
And all around the air did say
My lady soon stir this way
In sorrow known
The white queen walks and the night grows pale
Stars of lovingness in her hair
Needing - unheard
Pleading - one word
So sad her eyes
She cannot see
How did thee fare, what have thee seen
The mother of the willow green
I call her name
And 'neath the window have I stayed
I loved the foot steps that she made
And when she came
White queen how my heart did ache
And dry my lips no words can make
Still I wait
My Goddess hear my darkest fear
I speak too late
It's for evermore that I wait
Dear friends, goodbye
No tears my eyes
So sad it ends
As it began Brian: Thanks a lot, thank you. Thanks a lot, thanks a lot, it's nice to see you all again tonight, makes the Rainbow feel like home for us, great. We've narrowly, narrowly escaped having a number one single this week, ah, and this is the side which you haven't been hearing on the Tony Blackburn show

This track ends with a short instrumental from 'Brighton Rock'. It was not included on the 'Box Of Tricks' video, although the dialogue at the end was.
Details of the original version can be found on the 'Sheer Heart Attack' album page. Brian: It's called 'Flick Of The Wrist', thank you Dislocate your spine if you don't sign he says
I'll have you seeing double, double
Mesmerise you when he's tongue tied
Simply with those eyes
Synchronise your minds and see
The beast within him rise
Don't look back
Don't look back
Flick of the wrist and you're dead baby
Blow him a kiss and you're mad
Flick of the wrist - he'll eat your heart out
Dig in the ribs and then a kick in the head
Taken an arm, taken a leg
All this time honey
Baby you've been had
Intoxicate your brain with what I'm saying
If not you'll lie in knee deep trouble
Prostitute yourself he says
Castrate your human pride
Sacrifice your leisure days
Let me squeeze you till you've dried
Don't look back
Don't look back
It's a rip off
Work my fingers to my bones
Scream with pain
Still make no impression
Seduce you with his money make machine
Cross collateralise
Reduce you to a muzak fake machine
And then the last goodbye, bye, bye, bye
Flick of the wrist and you're dead baby
Blow him a kiss and you're mad
Flick of the wrist - he'll eat your heart out
Dig in the ribs and then a kick in the head
Taken an arm, taken a leg
All this time honey
Baby you've been had Roger: Ta, ta
Freddie: Thank you, thank you. Now then, ha, ha, ha, well your guess is right. Right now we'd like to do something new for you actually, it's about four pieces that we've put together, a sort of a medley, um, three of them are on our new album 'Sheer Heart Attack', thank you, which is now racing up the charts, thanks to you

The version on the video in the 'Box Of Tricks' is an edit, which loses some of the first two verses, from approximately 0:49 to 1:54, giving a length of 2:38. It also features some slightly different dialogue from Freddie during the 'false stop', so is either from the previous concert, or has overdubs.
Details of the original version can be found on the 'Queen' album page. Freddie: This is a number called 'Son And Daughter' I want you
So watch out
Tried to be your son and daughter
Rolled into one, yes I did
You said you'd equal any man
For having your fun
Ooh, now didn't you feel surprised to find
The cap just didn't fit
A woman expects a man
To buckle down and a shovel
What'll you do for loving
If it's only just begun, yeah
I want you
To be a woman
Well I tried to be a preacher
And a fisher of men
An equal people preacher
Will you lead us all the same
Well I travelled all round
The world and found
A brand new word for day
Watching the time
Never linger behind
Pardon me I have to get away
What'll you do for heaven
If it's back from where you came
Listen
I want you Freddie: And then what? What's that? To be a woman
I want you to be a woman

Right now we'd like to do a number written by Brian when he was a little teenage boy, do you know what that one is? It's a little message to all of you that have come here tonight, all it says is 'Keep Yourself Alive'.
Keep Yourself Alive

Just you, keep yourself alive
I was told a million times of all the troubles in my way
Might he grow a little wiser, little better every day
But if I crossed a million rivers, and I rode a million miles
Still be where I started, bread and butter for a smile
Sold a million mirrors in a shop in alley way
But I never saw my face in any window any day
Now they say your folks are telling you be a superstar
Tell you just be satisfied, stay right where you are
Keep yourself alive, keep yourself alive
All you people keep yourself alive
Shake
Well I loved a million women in a belladonic haze
And I ate a million dinners brought to me on silver trays
Give me everything I need, feed my body and my soul
Then I'll grow a bigger, maybe that can be my goal
Told a million times of all the people in my way
How I'd have to keep on trying and get better every day
But if I crossed a million rivers, and I rode a million miles
Still be where I started, same as when I started
Keep yourself alive, keep yourself alive
All you people keep yourself alive

The remaining 42 seconds of the track are the same, and this extends the track to 1:09.
Details of other drum solos can be found on the Live Solos & Improvisations page. Freddie: Now shake
Keep Yourself Alive
(reprise)
Track 16. Track length 1:25, song length 0:59.
This track segues from Roger's drum solo, and was omitted from the double LP set. The version on the 'Box Of Tricks' video only retains the first 22 seconds of the track, before segueing into 'Liar'.
Details of the original version can be found on the 'Queen' album page. Keep yourself alive, keep yourself alive
All you people keep yourself alive Do you think you're better every day?
No, I just think I'm two steps nearer to my grave (Roger: Ow) Come on and keep yourself alive, keep yourself alive
All you people keep yourself alive
Keep yourself alive, keep yourself alive
All you people keep yourself alive
Keep yourself alive, come on, come on, keep yourself alive
All you people keep yourself alive Freddie: Thank you.
Roger: Thank you, we'd like to feature for you now, commonly referred to in the press as Mr two-fingered Freddie Mercury, using all ten fingers tonight, we hope you're gonna enjoy this, it's a good one this, it's really loud, you know, it's alright, appeals to the lower elements such as myself
Seven Seas Of Rhye
Track 17. Track length 3:28, song length 3:01.
This track was omitted from the double LP set, and the 'Box Of Tricks' video, although the dialogue at the end was included.
Details of the original version can be found on the 'Queen II' album page. Roger: This one's called the 'Seven Seas Of Rhye' Fear me you Lords and Lady preachers
I descend upon your earth from the skies
I command your very souls you unbelievers
Bring before me what is mine
The seven seas of rhye
Can you hear me you peers and privy councillors
I stand before you naked to the eyes
I will destroy any man dares abuse my trust
I swear that you'll be mine
The seven seas of rhye
Sister - I live and lie for you
Mister - do and I'll die
You are mine I possess you
Belong to you forever, ever, ever
Storm the master marathon I'll fly through
By flash and thunder fire and I'll survive (I'll survive, I'll survive)
Then I'll defy the laws of nature
Come out alive
Then I'll get you
Be gone with you, you shod and shady senators
Give out the good, leave out the bad evil cries
I challenge the mighty Titan and his troubadours
And with a smile
I'll take you to the seven seas of rhye
Come on, let me take you
Come on, let me take you
The seven seas of rhye Freddie: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you very much. Do you like my claws? They're real diamonds. It's a present from the devil himself. You don't believe me? They don't believe me! Right now we'd like to do some rock 'n' roll, a la Queen

Roger: A one, two, three, four, a, one, two, three, four Sleeping very soundly on a Saturday morning I was dreaming I was Al Capone

Stone cold crazy, you know Freddie: Thank you, thank you dears. Now then, we've come to a point in time, we'd like to do (audience shout 'Liar') a number that was released, oh they know it, might as well get on with it, it's a number released in the States as a single Brian: Thanks a lot, you're really great

Liar, they bring you down before you begin
Now let me tell you this
So now you know you could be dead before they let you Brian: Great, thanks a lot, thanks a lot for making it seem like coming home to the Rainbow this time, it's been really great
In The Lap Of The Gods.... Revisited
Track 20. Track length 4:10, song length 4:04.
There are a number of lyric differences between the 'Live At The Rainbow '74' releases and the 'Box Of Tricks' video, with the video footage showing that the differences were sung, rather than being overdubs. Brian's introductory dialogue and Freddie's piano are also different. As such its seems that the two versions are from different performances, but it is unclear which one comes from each night. The 'Box Of Tricks' video is slightly shorter, as it segues into 'Jailhouse Rock', giving a length of 4:01.
Details of the original version can be found on the 'Sheer Heart Attack' album page. Brian: To finish up with, this is something from the new album, 'Sheer Heart Attack', written by young Freddie over there, it's called 'In The Lap Of The Gods... Revisited', thank you, goodnight Brian: We'd like to finish off with a number off the new album as well, it's written by young Mercury over there, young Merc, it's called 'In The Lap Of The Gods - Revisited'. Thank you, thanks a lot. It's so easy, but I can't do it
It's so risky, but I gotta chance it
So funny, there's nothing to laugh about
My money, that's all you wanna talk about
I can see what you want me to be But that's not true
It's in the lap of the Gods
Wo, wo, la, la, la, wo I can see what you want me to be That's not true but I'm no fool There's no beginning, there's no ending There's no meaning in my pretending
But believe me, life goes on and on and on
Forgive me when I ask you where do I belong
I can see what you want me to be That's not true but I'm no fool It's in the lap of the Gods
Wo, wo, la, la, la, wo
Wo, wo, la, la, wah, wah, ooh I'm no fool but that's not true It's in the lap of the Gods
Wo, wo, la, la, la, wo
Wo, wo, la, la, wah, wah, ooh But I'm no fool
It's in the lap of the Gods
Wo, wo, la, la, la, wo
Wo, wo, la, la, wah, wah, ooh I'm that's no fool
It's in the lap of the Gods
Wo, wo, la, la, la, wo
Wo, wo, la, la, wah, wah, ooh
I'm no fool

Let me get right to the point

The old bop is getting tired, don't you know, well you know what I mean
Fifty-eight that was great but it's over now and that's all
Something harder's coming up, gonna knock a hole in the wall
Gonna grab you hit you hard, gonna make you ten feet tall
Well I hope that a brand new baby's gonna come along soon
And you know it could happen, any old rainy afternoon
When the temperature's down and the juke box blowing a fuse
And the (unknown lyric) like just like a Sunday school cruise
And you know everybody in this world could use
Modern times - rock 'n' roll
Modern times - rock 'n' roll
Get your high heeled guitar styled boots and some groovy clothes
Get a hair piece on your chest, a ring through your nose
Find a nice little man who's gonna make you big, big star
Stars in your eyes, ants in your pants, you gotta go far
And you know everybody in this bum sucking world should go far
Rock 'n' roll
